Our
aquaponics farm is located 45 minutes north of Montreal in Quebec.
It has produced more than 1.4 million heads of lettuce and
over 50,000 smoked trout filets since the first harvest
in June 2005, while only using 2 litres of water per minute. With
today's strict environmental policies, this is a true breakthrough
in water conservation.
Aquaponics is a farming method that uses the same
water to raise both fish and plants - in this case, rainbow trout
and Boston lettuce. The technique requires no added chemical
fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides or algaecides because
the fish waste provides almost all the nutrients required by the
plants, and any insects, fungi or algae are controlled by natural
methods. Water is also conserved as it circulates between the fish
and lettuce basins. It is analogous to the ecosystem of a lake,
in which all components have a symbiotic relationship.
As
far as we know, it is the world's first and only commercial
aquaponic operation producing rainbow trout and lettuce all year
long. M.L. Aquaponics, has been in operation since 2005
and has come a long way in perfecting linked and unlinked commercial
aquaponic systems.
